House of Parihoa

The House of Parihoa, designed by architect Andrew Patterson for the original owners, captivated me with its otherworldly presence atop cliffs overlooking the ocean. The “black box,” which stood in stark contrast to the surrounding farm pasture, had a paradoxical sense of belonging to the land.

Andrew Patterson's vision for the home, initiated by the Custodians at the time, was for a fortress-like residence that would protect the occupants from storms. The home, much like a ship navigating the ever-changing ocean, was designed to provide comfort to all. Situated within a farm setting, it also had to endure the challenges posed by sheep rubbing against the paint or the relentless summer flies, similar to a traditional farmhouse.

Over the course of my twelve years as the Custodian, living in this extraordinary home, I have developed an even greater appreciation for its architectural and construction elements. The subject of a high court decision, the previous owners faced numerous obstacles. I have consistently expressed my gratitude for the effort invested in my role as the next owner, allowing me to experience the home’s unique charm.

With the assistance of Andrew Patterson, we extended the home by incorporating the Jewel Box, a floating space designed to serve as a focal point for showcasing talent, hosting activities, and displaying exquisite jewelry. The Jewel Box has been utilized for various purposes, including music, yoga, breathwork, peaceful reflection, weddings, product launches, and numerous other events. Its proximity to the main house fosters an intimate atmosphere.

The House of Parihoa has garnered significant media attention and is a well-known vision for many New Zealanders. While many may recognize the home, they may not always know its exact location. This recognition is, in my opinion, its greatest gift. In a secluded setting that feels like the edge of the world, the house is surprisingly only 40 minutes from Auckland.
