Finding the Beat: How to Build a Sustainable Rhythm for Growth

Today's reflection is about the 'beat'. In my experience, it's vital to establish structure in your processes and to have a rhythm that repeats weekly. If you have a weekly process, you build momentum week on week. If it's a daily process that you refine tomorrow and the day after, it will improve very quickly.

For me, the exercise is in creating processes that establish this beat within the company. The more processes you can incorporate into that structure, the greater the flow and the more things start to happen.

However, it's essential to be very adaptive and reflective. Each time you repeat a process, you should continuously improve it. I'm a believer in relentless innovation—not resting on our laurels, but actively seeking feedback on whether a process is working or needs changing. We shouldn't do things for the sake of it; we should measure the results. This is particularly satisfying at the beginning of a new venture because it gives you a tangible sense of progress.

It's also really important not to compare this new venture—this 'life two'—with 'life one'. When you're creating something new, it requires a new formula. We may have the 'muscle' from our previous experiences, but what we need for this next chapter is often something different. This is where the inflection point lies: the transition between how we have done things before and how we will do them in the future. Even if many of our old methods were right and got us to where we are now, we must ask: what will get us to the future?

This is where a well-being-oriented approach becomes crucial. In growing something and setting the beat, we need to find the right tempo—one that doesn't unbalance ourselves or others. This is the kind of sustainable flow I believe is possible. If we can maintain the beat at the right pace, manage our own well-being while still creating, and keep the entire company in that same zone, we will build organisations with well-being at their centre.

It's fascinating for me to be at the very beginning of this journey and to feel that tension myself. Sometimes I push the beat a little too fast and have to course-correct, reminding myself, "Hang on, you can't go that quick. You need to get these basics right." Or I realise a process isn't working and needs to be scrapped entirely. This experimentation is part of forging the formula for the future, and it is all happening in the present.
